What Causes Muscle Knots?

These muscle spasms cause your muscle fibres to continuously be activated and deactivated (i.e. contract and relax).  During muscle spasms your muscles will sometimes remain contracted for extended periods of time before they relax.

This results in a consistent tightening of the muscle fibres, the obstruction of blood flow to the muscle and thus oxygen flow to the muscle.

Eventually this will cause the formation of what is known as a muscle knot, leading to the intense pain you feel.
